This CD is well worth every penny. The recording/engineering is first rate. The sound is lively. The DJs are spot on(Tricky is on track 11). This breath of fresh air comes at a time when it seems like every CD I get is crap. I also got the unmixed CD. It doesn't matter if you are 16 or 96, these recordings and mixes will appeal to everyone! Do not let this pass you buy if you are considering this CD. Also, on Blue Note, Madlib did a remix called "Shades of Blue" that also is worth a listen. Again, good mixes, good recordings and first rate engineering make this CD appeal to everyone from Audiophiles to Techno ravers.

Encouraged by the success of the first VERVE REMIXED album, the techno-friendly souls at Verve have once again opened up their vaults to electronica artists. This time around, the Funky Lowlives kick things off with Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," a minimal yet urgent rendition of the classic, replete with occasional synthesizer washes and driving percussion. Felix Da Housecat gives Nina Simone a fittingly decadent house treatment on "Sinnerman," while the Gotan Project takes a more subtle accordion-driven approach on Sarah Vaughan's saucy "Whatever Lola Wants." Other standout tracks include Layo & Bushwacka's dreamy remix of Ella Fitzgerald's "Angel Eyes," Fila Brazillia's sunny version of Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce," Dan the Automator's funky side of Willie Bobo's "Fried Neckbones and Some Home Fries," and Koop's surprisingly traditional version of Astrud Gilberto's "Here's That Rainy Day." While these re-workings are obviously dance-floor oriented, the brilliance of the original recordings always manages to shine through, making the collection appealing to both club kids and jazz fans.

Recording information: 2005. Verve produced some of the most evocative, groove-oriented instrumental albums of the 1960s and '70s, a fact not lost on DJs and remix artists in the '90s and 2000s, who packed their crates with the label's back catalogue. Interestingly, this VERVE REMIXED set does not focus on standard club fare by mixing Verve samples with breakbeats. Instead, the guest producers look to the label's more famous female vocalists. Treatments of songs by Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Astrud Gilberto, and Dinah Washington, among others, combine the stellar voices of these singers and the sultry jazz of their original recordings with high-end contemporary electronica. The Postal Service's remix of Nina Simone's "Little Girl Blue" is virtually unrecognizable through its driving bounce, until Simone's familiar voice comes floating through. The Bent remix of Holiday's "Speak Low" gives it a dreamy, tropical sway that suits the tune nicely, while the quirky salsa groove of Anita O'Day's "Sing, Sing, Sing" and the pulsing indie-rock take on Vaughan's "Fever" are hypnotic and attention-grabbing. Other highlights include Brazilian Girls' New Wave/acid-house rendition of Blossom Dearie's "Just One of Those Things" and RJD2's trip-hop take on Astrud Gilberto's "The Gentle Rain." Hayley Westenra's first two albums - Odyssey and Pure – blended classical arias, traditional Irish and Maori folk songs with great success. This third album, while covering similar ground in terms of musical styles, is slightly different. Recorded in Dublin, it thematically celebrates Westenra's family roots - namely her grandparent's journey across the world from Ireland to New Zealand in the 1880s - featuring not only cover versions, but also several of her own compositions. The bad news is that the choice of covers on Treasure is not startlingly original. Songs like "Danny Boy," "Scarborough Fair", and "Shenandoah," have been sung by a thousand voices, and though Westenra's versions aren't without merit, they hardly break new ground. More interesting are Westenra's own compositions, such as "Summer Fly," a Norah Jones-esque slice of countrified folk that breaks up the smoothness of Treasure beautifully, and "Whispering Hope," a jaw-droppingly gorgeous hymn recorded a capella alongside a choir. A mixed bag of songs it is, but Westenra's enormously enchanting voice ensures it a place in any collection

With her versatile soprano, stunning good looks and unflinching passion for opera, Natasha Marsh has become a firm favourite with classical fans. The new release by keyboardist Hiromi Uehara and her trio doesn't fit easily into jazz categories. Electric and high-propulsion at times, it aligns with aspects of fusion, but shouldn't be limited by what that term has been burdened with over the years. Hiromi's Sonicbloom is international in its membership, with a Japanese leader, a Slovakian drummer (Martin Valihora), and a British bassist (Tony Grey). They're joined by guest guitarist Dave "Fuze" Fiuczynski (from Screaming Headless Torsos, Lunar Crash, and other outfits), and they recorded in--gasp--Nashville! Time is the thread that runs through many of the compositions, and they successfully bend its perception. From the multi-part "Time Out," which finds one part bursting out of another like nesting dolls, to the expansive tapestry of "Deep into the Night," which feels like a part of the continuity that is always blanketing half the earth, Hiromi and her compatriots go from being as precise as a clock to as haunting as a memory to as playful as a kitten (the wonderful "Time Flies" feels like it was composed in honor of a cat's darting attentions).
