Among the most controversial recordings in the history of jazz, BITCHES BREW was Miles Davis' shot across the bow of jazz insularity, a bold statement about jazz's ability to draw upon elements of popular culture, without mitigating its spirit of spontaneous invention. Much as Ornette Coleman's THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO COME set a new standard for harmonic and melodic freedom a decade before, BITCHES BREW signaled a sea change in jazz. Davis became a lightning rod for jazz's transformation, by mixing the best elements of '60s free jazz with dancing funk rhythms, electric rock textures, blues phrasing and his own breakthroughs in harmony and modality. Davis employed the Electric Flag's Harvey Brooks to double up with upright bassist Dave Holland on the Fender bass, and he is the modal heartbeat of every tune, freeing up the multiple drummers and keyboardists to weave a complex polytonal/polyrhythmic web of volatile chords and colliding rhythms. Joe Zawinul's "Pharaoh's Dance" and Davis' "Bitches Brew" treat their multiple themes in a ritualistic manner, as several strata of voices engage the lead melody in exciting exchanges. "Spanish Key" offers a thrilling sense of tension and release, as the trumpeter navigates a "Sex Machine"-styled vamp with a terse, brilliantly constructed solo, revelling in his new guitar-like phrasing. "John McLaughlin" is Davis' tribute to the innovative guitarist; "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down" is a spooky, visceral melange of funk, blues and third world sources; and Shorter's "Sanctuary" is a moody ballad that builds to a fever pitch. The savage emotional power of BITCHES BREW and Davis' subsequent recordings cries out for a fresh critical reassessment.

This album has received contrasting reviews here, and I am in the strange position of having agreed somewhat, at one time or another, with both extremes of opinion. Upon first hearing it, I too was put off by what sounded like sloppy playing (from the band--Buddy is ALWAYS perfect!). Further listening, however, brought me to an appreciation of the sound.
I think the problem for some may be that "Buddy and Soul" is a stylistic departure from Buddy's other albums of the period, and perhaps not everyone realizes the differences were intentional. The grungy "garage band" sound of this album is rather unique (even if it takes some getting used to) and is actually appropriate for an album including music by the Doors.
If I am correct in my judgments about this album, it was a rather bold step in the career of Buddy Rich, a musician whose sensibilities were formed in the Big Band/Swing era. Perhaps like Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich was willing to undertake and include any music that caught his ear, no matter the source.

So what we have here is a hard-swinging band working at also being a hard-rocking one, and I think it works fairly well. Something that should be mentioned here, as I don't believe anyone else has made note of it, is the track entitled "Wonderbag". This is in fact a very straight arrangement of Stevie Wonder's "Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day", practically Stevie's own version without the vocals. The credit found alongside the track's title apparently identifies the arranger, and leaves composer Stevie out entirely.

If you think of Buddy Rich as a performer in the big band style, and do not wish to hear him any other way, you probably should not lay out the money for this album. If on the other hand you enjoy Buddy Rich in any setting, "Buddy and Soul" will find a place in your collection. This album preserves what is possibly a rare side of one of the twentieth century's finest musicians, a stage in the evolution of an amazing career.

Recorded live in Hollywood at Western Recorders and the infamous Whiskey A Go-Go, BUDDY AND SOUL represents a high spot in this period of Rich`s storied career. To be sure, Rich was a dyed-in-the-wool swing drummer, but he could still drive a rocking beat with the best of them while pushing his enormous band to its limits. Despite the added star power, the record is still Botti's show, as he reminds listeners with his smooth, atmospheric Chet Baker-inspired horn lines, particularly on the gently floating "Embraceable You" and the romantic title track.

Overtime is really two CDs in one. On the instrumentals, particularly "Boss City" and "Blue in Green," guitarist Lee Ritenour sounds a lot like Wes Montgomery and he leads his group (which features either Ernie Watts or Eric Marienthal on tenor) through some relatively straight-ahead numbers filled with soulful and creative playing. However the five vocals numbers are much more in the R&B/smooth vein and are largely throwaways despite the occasional presence of Ivan Lins. Clearly Ritenour was going for variety on this project but will probably only satisfy his greatest fans. The jazz listeners will be turned off by the vocals and the pop/smooth fans will probably only tolerate some of the more adventurous originals. Ritenour sounds fine in both settings but probably should have recorded twice as much music and split this CD into two.

Rhythm 'n' Blues - Early Doo-Wop

Final RnB box (pfew, finally!). It's my favorite of the four on this blog because although I can't sing at all, I too have a bass and falsetto voice that need to get out sometimes.
This is music with the emphasis on vocal harmony, a broad category, yet Doo-Wop isn't hard to distinguish from something like Barbershop. The recordings are almost exclusively from the 1950's, before that the doo-wop sound was more a vocal backing rather than a style in the spotlights itself.
There's more in the Membran catalogue, these sets are under "New Style 4 CD Book Format", like 'RnB Nasty' and 'music for striptease' sounds intriguing too. They're available on-line and your local shop probably can order them without problems.
This set too is 4 CDs + a book containing an introduction, biographies (German and English) and a lot of pictures of the artists.

Rhythm 'n' Blues - Fine Brown Sugar

'Fine Brown Sugar' is dedicated to the women of the blues, seeing how they're not immediately associated with the blues and having to compete with men in a male dominated society and blah, blah, blah. The rarity of female blues singers justifies this set although that argument loses its strength a little when you get 4 CDs * 25 tracks full. Not that rare then. What I'm trying to say is: if you want to make a 4CD box with female RnB artists only, I don't need to have a reason, I'll accept that box happily without any questions or nagging.
They're just as good as their male counterparts, just as swinging and just as dirty. Men can play the blues and men can cause the blues too but in the end we'll need each other for some good rockin'.
This set provides some good rockin', from the blues woman's perspective, that's what makes this album special. The music and package are equal to the other boxes, so you know what you can expect. Enjoy!

Rhythm 'n' Blues - Shouters

Same kind of set as the 'Boogie Woogie Goodies' but this focuses on the shouters, the lead singers of RnB ensembles, and is closer to early Rock 'n' Roll. "Shouters": some even sang unamplified in front of their bands!
It's an overdose, another 100 tracks of RnB, but the two sets together do give a good introduction to the RnB era. My approach is to simply line 'm all up in a playlist and play the list, browsing occasionaly in the linernotes to read up on individual artists. Each CD is about an hour worth of music, so it can be handled but there's more where this came from.
German label Membran (site also in English) specializes in these kind of re-issues in various genres, including jazz and classical but much more. These sets sold for little less than 20 euro which I find very decent for 4 CDs and good artwork/info.

The cover mentions "Rhythm 'N' Blues Magazine 1945 - 1954" but I can't find anything relating to an existing magazine like Blues & Rhythm Magazine.

Long ago, before he achieved relative stardom with his Nordic, somewhat new-agey recreations of medieval music, Jan Garbarek produced a handful of spectacular, robust albums for ECM where the influence of free jazz, particularly Albert Ayler, was paramount. Afric Pepperbird was his first recording for the then fledgling label and it features his quartet at the height of their powers, embellishing his muscular and imaginative compositions with outstanding, individualistic playing. From the eerie keening of the opening "Scarabee," framed by Jon Christensen's pinpoint delicate drums, to the hard-driving "Beast of Kommodo" with the leaders wailing bass sax to Rypdal's manic explorations on Blow Away Zone, this is one stellar effort. Add to that three drop-dead gorgeous miniatures by the great and undersung bassist Arild Andersen and the title track, one of the most deliriously infectious melodies you'll ever hear. Together with Sart, Tryptikon, and Witchi-Tai-To (as well as a prior recording on Flying Dutchman), this album represents the strongest, most aggressive portion of Garbarek's career, before he succumbed to what became known as the ECM aesthetic. Very highly recommended.

In February 1970, Eric Clapton toured the United States with Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett In June, Clapton formed a new group, Derek And The Dominos, playing their first show on June 14 in London In August, the group was playing UK clubs and halls, a highlight of the shows being Tell The Truth In late August, the group was in Miami to record Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs before returning to Europe The Dominos then played the United States in October and November.

What's interesting is that when the Dominos played Cincinnati in November, their set did not feature a single track from the Layla sessions/album While other bands would be killing themselves trying to promote their new songs and album - Layla would be released in December - Clapton probably had other thoughts in mind Probably at that time, Clapton felt he needed Duanne Allman (who had guested on Layla) onstage to do any justice to the Layla songs.

But that does not mean that the Cincinnati show was a "lesser" show There's enough power blues and jamming here to satisfy any diehard fan To top it all, there's a momentus jam with BB King on Everyday I Have The Blues.
