Femi Kuti - Africa Shrine

This album was recorded live in Lagos (Nigeria) at the mythical Africa Shrine, where Femi Kuti, son of the legendary Fela Kuti, and his band "The Positive Force" perform every Sunday, denouncing the abuses of corrupt government and one-way globalisation.

The Shrine - a concert hall at night, social drop-in centre in the daytime, living space, a place for political instruction, the Shrine remains a theatre where awareness is mixed with forgetting, words are put to music.
As soon as his twenty musicians and dancers are gathered around him, Femi Kuti becomes a tremendously forceful showman, unable to part from his audience after five hours of showtime. The incredible scene of a worn-out animal pacing up and down the stage, until the crowd galvanize him enough to play one last song, then another, and another… "He keeps his trumpet with him even in his tub", says one of his closest choir members.When

Femi Kuti plays to the extreme like this, his African Jazz-Funk seems to possess an inexhaustible, fascinating energy. And just seeing the energy issuing from Femi and his group, as well as the communion of his audience, we can understand why, from the Afro-House stage of New York to the Rap scene of Chicago, from the Afro-beat nights of London to the minimal techno of Cologne, so many people of the west dream of going some day to Lagos and get involved in one of those mythical Sunday Jumps.

To fully understand the enterprise involved in the recording of this concert, we must go back 35 years. Nigeria was already one of the most dangerous countries in the world. The government was bleeding its own nation for the economic interests of the West, sending the army into the streets to shoot at demonstrators, rigging elections and abandoning the people in deep-rooted misery...From the heart of the resulting social and political chaos, the voice of Fela Kuti echoed as a hope of justice. His fate wavered between personal persecutions and collective triumphs in the name of his people and his country.
You cannot resume the importance of the 'Black President' in a few lines. Auteur of dozens of albums which have become classics, poet of the dignity of a people and critic of corrupt powers, Fela Kuti remains the most celebrated icon of African music of the 20th Century.
First female Union leader in Nigeria, his mother, a tireless militant, would strike fear into corrupt politicians and fight for independence and women's right to vote. She instilled in him the duty to fight for his people. Fela Kuti passed this heritage on to his own children in turn.

AMG Always one to push things to the limit, out-there rapper/producer Beans hands some beats over to avant-jazzers William Parker and Hamid Drake for one of the most sparse and narrow releases in Thirsty Ear's genre-smashing Blue Series. Only is a skeletal, midnight album, and while it's narrow enough to be considered a mood piece that won't always suit the listener, it's Beans' bold choice to keep things lean. Looking to emulate a bop trio, he pares his own contributions down so as not to take advantage of the layering possibilities of electronics. He also throws bassist Parker and drummer Drake some of the most tastefully dated beats he's ever brewed, some approaching cheese, but run through a sinister, crackling filter. Parker winds around the backing tracks and slowly creates loose melodies, but Drake responds with funk and lots of tense friction, snapping on the snare to lure the listener out of hypnosis and shockingly laying down a stomp like he was a garage band drummer on the sprawling "20." Fans of Beans' unlikely words should be aware he's frequently just a producer, but the trade-off is he's 100-percent himself when he grabs the mic and not the least bit tentative in these heady surroundings. It is his second go-around in the Blue Series after all -- the first time being with his Antipop Consortium crew and pianist Matthew Shipp in 2000 -- so he's free as a bird and more than willing to diss other rappers, mention Jay-Z bootlegs, drop the "MF"'s as needed, and deliver those quick lines that are totally Beans ("Peace to MCs/you're all my dogs now /so play dead" or maybe just "Hairy palm narcissist"). With all these giant, heralded names playing their roles so perfectly, it's not that Only is more than the sum of its parts, but this trio is channeling this music as a collective much more than individually creating it. Each musician offers their abundant talents selfishly to this stark project, and the results are as pure as they are riveting.

JAMES COTTON - Deep In The Blues (1996)

"Deep In The Blues" won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. This is James Cotton unplugged--an all-acoustic album collaboration (in various combinations) with pianist Dave Maxwell, blues guitarist Joe Louis Walker, and the great jazz bassist Charlie Haden. There are so many spellbinding moments here that it's almost a shame to single any of them out. However, highlights definitely include Walker's National steel guitar solo "Vineyard Blues," Cotton and Maxwell's deeply moving take on Maceo Merryweather's "Worried Life Blues" (a performance which easily surpasses the better known versions by Chuck Berry and the Animals), and a spectacular version of Muddy Waters' "Two Trains Running." Cotton also gives us the Little Walter-ish harp showcase "Everybody's Fishin'."

"Everything I Need", a re-release from British blues-rocker Aynsley Lister, is a breath of fresh air from start to finish. However, it’s no surprise that many blues-rock listeners haven’t heard his name, nor have they been exposed to his exciting guitar playing style and potent vocal ability, even though he’s been releasing impressive records since 1999 and touring extensively. "The title's baloney. Sure, some of Buddy Guy's most blistering guitar playing has been captured on his '90s recordings for Silvertone, but with albums like Muddy Waters's 1964 Folk Singer and his own 1967 solo debut A Man & the Blues on his résumé, Guy's status as a Chicago blues giant was assured long before his 1991 comeback Damn Right, I've Got the Blues. Nonetheless, that tune, the instrumental tribute "Remembering Stevie" (for the late guitar-slinger Vaughan), "Five Long Years," and the previously unissued "Miss Ida B" testify that at age 65 Guy still possesses rare depth and fire. His singing is big and soulful, capable of cheerleading a party or hurtling down to the depths of Delta blues heartache. His six-stringing remains wildly inventive and unpredictable, even on slight numbers like "She's a Superstar." And the inclusion of blatant stabs at the pop charts such as his "Midnight Train" duet with Jonny Lang take nothing away from the passion he puts into true blues performances like "I Need Your Love So Bad" and "Innocent Man," leftovers from earlier sessions that surface here. Baddest or not, this CD spotlights one of our greatest bluesmen in fine form."

BONNIE RAITT - Silver Lining (2002)

"The latest in a series of highly polished albums of good-natured boogie, blues, and singer-songwriter fare, Bonnie Raitt's Silver Lining won't disappoint the initiated. Recorded with her highly seasoned road band and coproduced (again) by the ubiquitous Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake, this is a high-quality product. The question, as always, is whether the material raises it to the level of extraordinary. Raitt picks songs shrewdly. Here, the unearthed gems are David Gray's title song and the closing ballad, "Wounded Heart," by Jude Johnson. Less successful and more, well, familiar are the songs cowritten with her bandmates. Instrumental highlights include Bonnie's slide duel with Roy Rogers on "Gnawin' It" and Andy Abad's highlife guitar chops on Oliver Mtukudzi's "Hear Me Lord." Jon Cleary's barrelhouse keys throughout owe a debt to Billy Payne of Little Feat. One may occasionally wish the producers had been allowed more rein to pepper the arrangements with their trademark quirky instrumentation, but the record rewards repeated listens."

B.B.KING - Blues On The Bayou (1998)

There's an undeniable pleasure in listening to a veteran bluesman do his stuff. For Blues on the Bayou, which he also produced, B.B. King presents a stripped-down, simply-arranged recording that's as tight as a coiled spring and smooth as a freshly-polished dance floor. From the first track, "Blues Boys Tune," a slow instrumental dripping with organ riffs, this CD is chock-full of the sort of guitar work that a master like King makes sound effortless. Whether it's the mid-tempo playfulness of "Bad Case of Love," or the slow "Blues Man" with its sparkling-clean guitar work, or the wistfulness of "Darlin' What Happened," or the sheer sweetness of "If I Lost You," Blues on the Bayou proves why King is considered the reigning master of blues guitar. Even the violins sound right and proper here, and King's sidemen turn in some impressive work as well; there are in particular some great piano solos on this disc. On the whole, Blues on the Bayou is a slow-burning treat.
